The Stage
Geraldine Alexander’s production is well-executed and the cast is uniformly strong. Le Touzel’s loud Dolly is the perfect counterpoint to Downie’s precocious Esther. Together, they convincingly convey the sibling rivalry that has haunted the women through adolescence, marriage and adultery.

Arts desk
Geraldine Alexander’s compelling dramaturgy crafted an intriguing maze of family history, and she works the actors excellently.
Sisters Dolly and Esther grow up in ultra-conservative Harrogate in the ‘60s. 50 years later, following the death of their mother, Dolly comes to stay with Esther – now a successful novelist and living in Little Venice with her younger, inscrutable lodger, Jude. To make a new future they will have to be honest, heal old wounds, and the two sisters learn to laugh together again. Laced with humour, The Lodger is a story about identity, maturity and the possibility of reconciliation.

Guardian
Robert Holman’s play contains some great riches. A story of sisters and midlife reckonings, it puts two older women centre stage and comes with a seismic sibling betrayal. The Lodger is also the story of good and bad mothers, how the young relate to the old, and how the old nurture the young. Directed by Geraldine Alexander, it takes wildly unexpected turns and is stuffed full of wise statements about life, love and death.
